In the Spotlight: Melissa Hosack

Welcome to Melissa Hosack with her pen name here, Melissa Frost. :)

Where My Pen Name Came From – For my young adult titles, I wanted to use a pen name to separate them from my more adult works. It was something I deliberated over for quite a while. I wanted a name I still felt an attachment to. I’d thought of using my maiden name, as my mother always said she wanted to see that name on a book cover because I’d been writing since I was very young. My maiden name seemed hard to remember, though. In the end, I went with something very special to me – my son’s middle name.

Here is an excerpt from The Dating Tutor, my Evernight Teen release under Melissa Frost:

“Shut up and dance.” Alec tightened his grip on her waist when she made a feeble attempt to move away and pulled her closer. “Just follow what I’m doing. Let my body lead yours.”
She was completely tense, but as he started to sway to the soft music, she felt her body relaxing. Her shoulders eased and she melted against him, becoming pliant in his arms.
The front of his body pressed so closely to hers was a new experience she wasn’t quite sure she was comfortable with. He was warm and solid and…familiar in a way that itched at her soul. Her skin felt hot, and there was an uncomfortable emotion in her chest. One she did not want to be feeling…one she couldn’t be feeling. Not about Alec.
“Ellie!” His barking holler dragged her back from such thoughts. “That is the third time you’ve trampled my toes. It’s like you’re not even trying.” He scowled. “If you can’t lift your feet without hurting me, then you need to shuffle from side to side. At least Jake won’t lose a toe that way.”
“I…I…” She stared up at him in horror after the traitorous thoughts that had been running through her head. A girl wasn’t supposed to think such things about her best friend, especially when he was being so helpful. She licked her lips, took a deep breath, and silently berated herself to get her head on straight. “Sorry.” Taking his advice, she began shuffling her feet back and forth instead of lifting them. It saved her from stepping on his toes, but it upped the risk of her tripping.
“My feet thank you,” Alec said with a little chuckle. “Had I known you were going to tromp all over them, I might not have pushed so hard for the heels.”
Ellie smiled at him, some of her panic easing at his relaxed demeanor. “You did this to yourself.”
Alec shifted his hands, pressing one to her lower back as he pulled her closer. “This whole fiasco is your fault. If you weren’t so hopeless, we’d be at home right now watching the Islanders lose.”
“You usually don’t book dates on game night,” she said. In fact, he was usually dead set against it. Hockey came before girls. Always.
“I made an exception.” He grinned devilishly, his eyes shining in amusement. “I usually don’t have a good enough reason.”
“Wow.” She arched a brow at him, returning the playful banter. “Ellie comes before hockey. Aren’t I special?”
“You are.”
Her eyes widened at the husky tone of his voice. She would have sworn her heart stopped. She gazed up at Alec, feeling more confused than she’d ever been in her life.
His expression mirrored exactly how she felt – confused, unsure, and yet eager. Alec opened his mouth to speak, but she ruined the moment by tripping over her own feet.
She fell against his chest with a curse. “Shit!”
Alec caught her with a laugh. “Girls don’t say ‘shit’ on the first date. We’ve already been over the no swearing rule.”
She saw relief flash across his face as her ill-placed outburst broke up whatever moment they’d been caught in. She let out a laugh as the tension melted away as if it had never existed. “Shit. I forgot,” she said, purposely cursing again.
“You’re impossible.” He chuckled and shook his head of dark hair.
“No. These shoes are impossible,” she said with a giggle. “You’re a tyrant for making me wear them.” Balancing herself in his arms, she reached down to slip off the offending footwear. “I’m going barefoot.”
“Ellie,” he complained with an impatient growl. “That is… That is…”
She tossed the shoes toward their table and came back to him in her stocking-covered feet. She then did a playful little twirl to show off her new ability to move. Slipping back into his arms, she asked, “It’s what? And don’t you dare complain. I’m saving your feet, too.”
“It’s actually kind of sexy,” he said in a thick voice.
Her eyes widened as she looked up at him. The look he was giving her was intimate and full of tenderness. It had that uncomfortable feeling thumping in her chest again. This practice date had done nothing but confuse her more.

New Release: A Single Black Rose

Celebrate it with me by entering the giveaway below. :D

Blurb:

When actor Sean O’Reilly receives a flower bouquet containing a single black rose on set, he assumes they’re from his boyfriend Nate. But they aren’t. Flowers keep arriving for him after that, each with a black rose in the arrangement. Soon other things arrive as well, such as photos and a recording of Sean’s voice. As the number of flowers dwindle with each bouquet, Sean begins to worry they’re supposed to be some kind of a countdown ... but to what?

Fan Gene Scott worships Sean. He maintains a blog dedicated to the actor and writes out all his fantasies there. He wants Sean to belong to him, and only him, and he’ll do anything to make the actor his own. He can’t accept the fact that Sean has a boyfriend. To Gene, Nate might as well not exist.

Despite increased security and all efforts to keep him safe, Sean vanishes, and Nate feels as if his world has come tumbling down. When the police response is too slow for him, Nate enlists the help of his producer and bodyguard to find Sean. Will he manage to find his lover before Sean disappears forever? Or will Gene finally get what he’s always dreamed of, and make Sean the love of his life, instead?

Excerpt:
Note: may contain sexually explicit scenes of a homoerotic nature.
Gritting his teeth, Nate hisses under his breath. He is standing in front of a cop, giving his statement on what has just happened. Not that there's much to say. His mind keeps replaying that scene when Sean turned to him, his face ashen, and Nate wishes with all his heart that he was the one who had opened the door, the one who found the flowers instead of Sean, sparing him the shock of seeing the seemingly innocuous pink bouquet with its single black rose.

Nate is angry with himself, feeling like a failure even though he knows what happened wasn't his fault. There was no way he could have predicted that the pervert was going to put the flowers inside their SUV. He runs his fingers through his hair, ends his statement, and turns to go to Sean who is sitting slumped on the pavement with Osborn by his side. Sean is staring ahead of him, his face expressionless, his hands clenched tightly into fists. Osborn is talking to him but Sean seems to not be aware of him, or of anyone else around him for that matter.

“Excuse me, Mr. Matthews.”

A man stops in front of Nate, a reporter, judging by the tape recorder he holds in his hand, and Nate feels his temper rising. This is so not the time for an interview and how in the world did the media get to hear of this so quickly anyway? Fucking reporters.

“Yeah?” Nate asks impatiently.

“Scott, Eugene Scott from The Vancouver Daily." The man is tall, almost as tall as him, and Nate rarely meets someone who is the same height as him here in Vancouver. "Are these the first flowers Sean got from the stalker?"

“We don’t know if he’s stalking Sean or not.”

“But it’s obvious that he is, right?”

Nate frowns, looking at the reporter more closely, "No, it is not obvious that he, or she, is stalking Sean."

“Oh, it’s just -- but back to my question --”

“No, they’re not,” Nate cuts him short. He really wants to get this over with without being downright rude.

“Huh?”

“These are not the first flowers.”

Scott nods. “Any weird thing?” he asks.

“What do you mean?”

“You know, if there's something strange with the flowers or --”

“They’re just flowers, okay? Look. I’m tired and I really don’t have anything more to say. If you'll excuse me." Nate walks past Scott, going toward Sean who is still sitting at the same spot, alone. Nate glances over at Osborn who is now with the police, presumably giving his statements to them.

"Sean," he says softly as he sits beside Sean on the pavement. He puts his hand on Sean's knee, stilling it.

“Nate --” There's a tremor in Sean's voice.

Nate turns his head toward Sean who is looking even more agitated than before.

"Hey, man.” He puts his arm around Sean's shoulders, pulling him close, kissing him on the temple. He can feel Sean shaking. "I've got you."

“They found a picture,” Sean says abruptly. "Inside the flowers. The police showed it to me."

“What picture?” The police didn't say anything to him about that. Nate's stomach sinks. Sending flowers is one thing but pictures? Of Sean?

"It's one of me. Sleeping. Inside the house." Sean's voice is bordering on the hysterical now. "Whoever it is must have used a long-lens camera or something. How could they get through the gate, Nate?"

"Ssh, baby.” Nate tries to put as much reassurance as he can in his voice. Someone has to remain calm even though Nate is feeling anything but. He puts both his arms around Sean, can feel him trembling, and holds him even tighter. "Breathe with me, c'mon."

Sean stills and takes a deep breath. “Can we go home now? Have the police finished with us?"

"Yeah. Yeah, I think we can go home now." Nate stands up and holds out a hand to pull Sean up. They hold each other tight for a moment longer, both of them unaware of a pair of eyes watching them from a distance.

In the Spotlight: Louis Stevens

Welcome to my fellow JMS author, Louis Stevens, with his new book! :)

Blurb:

From the age of three, Tim Bailey wanted to marry Tom Watkins. Many changes occurred during their formative years, but Tim’s love for Tom remained rock solid. Even when Tom temporarily broke up with him to date girls, Tim never stopped loving Tom.

Because his father walking out on his family, Tim doesn’t trust easily. His boyfrien Tom’s bisexuality makes him uneasy. Tom is a popular high school football player who can have anyone he wants, boy or girl. So why would he choose nerdy Tim? The fact Tom won’t come out at school further feeds Tim’s insecurities and suspicions.

Tom has always felt the pressure from his dad and his friends to be the typical jock. This means hiding the gay side of his bisexuality and only acknowledging Tim in private. Tom has promised once they’re at college in New York, he and Tim will be able to live openly as a loving gay couple. Tim just needs to be patient.

Things come to a dramatic head at an event everyone has been waiting for, their end of year graduation party. Many truths are revealed, old scores are settled, and everyone’s lives are changed. Can Tom keep his promise to always love and protect Tim, or will previous lies and secrets kill off what has been growing between the boys for fifteen years?

EXCERPT:
“Are we having a good day?” asked Lacy. She flopped down next to Tim on the school’s lawn and settled herself.

“A great day!”

“Speak for yourself,” said Charlie as he followed suit. “What’s got you so chirpy?”

“All’s well in Timbaland?” asked Lacy.

“More like with Timone and Pumba,” Charlie snorted.

“Why you always got to be such a sourpuss, Charlie?” Tim asked. Turning his attention to Lacy, he said, “I’m pretty sure I know what’s been going on with Tom, and it’s got nothing to do with Amanda or any other $2 hooker,” he said.

“Do tell,” Lacy said.

“Yes, please, spill it. You know we all live for your drama.”

“Cut it out,” Lacy said.

Tim felt bad for Charlie at times like these. He knew it must be difficult to share in someone else’s happiness when you hadn’t ever had any of your own, but he refused to go there now. He was still on his high of learning the truth behind Tom’s weird moods. He’d have to have a talk with Charlie about his future plans with James, though, and soon. That man gave him the creeps.

“Well, spill it,” Lacy said.

“It was all just pre-moving jitters. He gets like that on the rare occasion.”

“It’s all that testosterone,” Charlie said.

“I concur,” Tim joked. “But it just bugs the hell out of me when he checks out like that. We had a long heart-to-heart and we know where we stand now.”

“Men,” Lacy said.

“Bi men, you mean,” Charlie said. “They’re even more messed up than the rest. Why can’t they just make up their mind?”

“Here we go,” Lacy said.

“I swear to God, it’s like something chemical change happens the moment they cum. You’re good enough to swallow, but then it’s all about their future and having kids and paying off a mortgage. Goddamn it, guys,” Charlie said.

He sounded so lost. Tim could relate completely to what Charlie was feeling, he just wouldn’t ever admit it aloud. There’d been many times that he had wondered about his and Tom’s true compatibility. He also knew Tom definitely wanted children. Preferably a brood of his own DNA, if Mr. Watkins had anything to say about that. Tim knew that was something he could never offer Tom, or Tom’s parents. It made him feel insecure at times, and the adoption argument just made him both angry and sadder at the same time. He sighed. Looked like that talk would have to happen sooner rather than later.

“When are you going to cut that man out of your life for good, Charlie? You deserve so much better,” Tim said.

“He’s just not healthy to you,” Lacy said.

“What the hell is this? Gang up on Charlie day?”

Lacy shook her head. “We only care about you, Charlie Chaplin,” she said, using her favorite pet name for her friend.

“And it’s us who have to listen to you bitch about him every day,” Tim continued. “He’s making you old before your time. And a bitch with wrinkles is not sexy.”

“Just like you can’t choose to stop loving Tom, or you,” he pointed at Lacy, “can choose to just get over Enrico after he got deported or whatever.”

“His student visa expired,” Lacy clarified.

“Whatever makes you sleep at night,” Charlie said, “but I can’t just switch of my emotions and cut Jamie off. He’s a one of a kind and I’m his supporting act.”

“Bullshit,” Tim said. His own vehemence surprised him, but he rolled with it. “A relationship is about giving and taking, am I wrong?” He looked to Lacy for confirmation, who still seemed to smart about Charlie’s visa comment. “He just takes and takes and then leaves you for dead. He’s a goddamn dodgy bastard, Charles, and I’m tired of warning you about him. Father’s money doesn’t a man maketh. He’s weird and he uses you. Why can’t you see that?” He took a breath and looked from Charlie to Lacy and then back at Charlie again.

“You think I enjoy it? You think I crave being treated like a disposable cum bag? I don’t find some sadistic joy in lurking in the shadows, waiting for my five minutes with the man I love and then seeing him create memories with other women, buying them a couture corsage for prom, taking them to dinner with his parents. I hate myself for picking up the goddamned phone when it rings at three in the morning, but I hate myself more for waiting up for the call.” Charlie was crying at this point, a rare show of emotion for their friend. “What I hate most is not knowing. I don’t know what’s going to happen next year. Where James is moving to, what I’m doing. I wanted to really give varsity a shot, but my father put that to an end. I would be content to just be with Jamie, but he just lives from one orgasm to the next. I’m sorry that my future doesn’t fit your cookie cutter recipe, but I’m doing the best I can with what I’ve been given, goddamn it,” he said. Charlie got up and started collecting his bag and keys off the ground. It was obvious that Charlie was humiliated for showing this uncanny display of emotion.

“Hold up, Charlie, he wasn’t attacking you,” Lacy said.

“I really wasn’t, buddy.”

“Just piss off,” Charlie said and walked off.

Mid Week Tease

Welcome to this Wednesday's Mid Week Tease. Thank you so much Sandra Bunino for hosting it.

My excerpt this time comes from my upcoming release, A Single Black Rose, which will be out from JMS Books on Sunday, November 17, 2013. It is my longest story so far, a novella of 16K. I was so happy when JMS accepted it. I still am.

Here is the excerpt. Hope you like it!
